High Graduation Rates
Montana has become the national leader in high school graduation rates! In 2024, the state achieved a stunning 94.5% on-time graduation rate! This put Montana atop the list of states in the U.S. having impressive on-time graduation rates, outpacing high performing states such as Vermont, Maine, and Wyoming. This accomplishment is significant for the state, not only from a pride perspective, but also as part of a long commitment to investing in education, community, and supporting students.

Montana has consistently dedicated itself to a holistic, student-centered approach to education. Throughout the state, school districts have established early intervention techniques that identify at-risk students, and offer some measure of assistance to those students, early and often. By having mechanisms in place to give students academic support, mentorship, and counseling beginning at the elementary and middle school level, Montana can help mitigate any issues before they are irreversible, like a student leaving school altogether.
Additionally, a number of school districts in Montana function with a strong degree of local control in addition to community involvement. Many Montana schools – in urban and rural settings – serve as a focal point for the community – most often a school will be considered the center of a community. Teachers, administers, and parents come together in a way to make sure that students feel uniquely cared for and that their personal and educational needs are addressed. This research points to what is truly needed to leverage the highest performance in students – a culture of support and committed collaborations – and schools are the best at doing this.
Montana’s leadership in educational performance has a long-term track record and supports the notion that performance is an outcome of being seen as a valued member of the community. The individuals mentioned earlier, being at risk students, may have successful stories to tell about overcoming adversity in Montana schools.
Montana has adopted a system of personalized learning, which allows students to make their way through the learning process at their own pace and receive instruction that is specifically tailored to meet their own needs. Schools blend traditional classroom instruction with modern digital tools (e.g., tablets, laptops, virtual instruction, etc.) to offer a more dynamic and better learning environment. In a state like Montana where vast geographical distances can place a sometimes heavier burden on access to education, this approach is vital.
Furthermore, the state is investing serious funds into career and technical education (CTE) programs, which are a clear path to postsecondary outcomes—whether that be attending college, entering the workforce, or entering vocational training. They also retain students by helping them see the real-world applications of what they’re studying, while allotting students a different pathway to a diploma, thus helping elevate graduation rates.
Montana also has put extensive emphasis on supporting its educators. Funding for professional development, comparable salaries (minus cost of living), and collaboration for teachers have helped the state grow a historically strong and motivated staff of educators. Continued teacher retention is essential for student relationship-building and positive school culture.
