Hiking

Hiking is a popular outdoor activity that involves walking in a natural environment. Hiking is similar to walking, but usually within some trail or other designated path. Hiking can be a simple way to get outdoors and it offers an enjoyable form of recreation as well. Hiking is a great activity for kids, adults and everyone in between! Hiking, as compared to some sports or fitness activities, does not typically involve a large financial investment, nor does it require a training course to begin. Hiking allows participants varying degrees of difficulty and are a flexible way to enjoy the outdoors! The basic hiking activities can include a leisurely walk through a forest, or a challenging climb to the top of a mountain. Hiking comes in different styles, and there are different types or categories of hiking. Day hiking means you’re out hiking a shorter distance and will return the same day so no overnight camping is necessary. Day hiking is for novice hikers as well as those who struggle with time. Backpacking is an outfitted, planned, multi-day hike where the hiker carries their camping equipment, food, etc. in a backpack so all the essentials are carried. The idea with backpacking is to explore areas that are deeper in the wilderness. The last hiking category is thru-hiking where an entire long-distance trail is hiked from start to finish, often taking weeks or months to complete

Hiking has a multitude of benefits beyond just the physical fitness aspect. Hiking provides a great workout physically, helping to build strength and balance, and improve cardiovascular health. It can have a full-body impact and usually burns more calories than walking on a treadmill because of its uneven surfaces and elevation changes. Mentally, hiking provides an escape from the pressures of everyday life. Being in nature can decrease anxiety, fight depression, and elevate mood. Walking and moving through forests, next to rivers, and up hills helps you to be in the moment, focus on the present, and let go of your day-to-day worries and stress. 

Another primary benefit of hiking is that it helps you get stimulated and attuned to the environment in a way that more densely populated or developed locations never will. When you spend time outside, you pay more attention to things you might easily overlook like sunsets, wildlife, trees, and ecosystems. Hiking offers a way to connect to nature, both to the land and to the animal kingdom itself. 

Hiking can also be a social experience. A lot of people hike with friends, families, and/or organized groups of people. Hiking can be a great way to bond, spend time with friends, and have shared experiences. Being on the trail, alone or with other hikers has a quality of freedom and adventure in a way that it is hard to find or replicate in entertainment activities or events.
